‍ ‍“Helping teens build confidence, manage anxiety and depression, and navigate the challenges of growing up.” Teen therapy at Focused Counseling offers a safe and supportive environment for youth aged 10 and up to explore their thoughts, emotions, and challenges with the guidance of a licensed therapist. These one-on-one sessions with John Opalka are designed to help teens struggling with anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, or school and friendship difficulties.

Signs Your Teen May Need Therapy

Teen therapy can help when a teen is:

  • Struggling with motivation or school related stress and anxiety

  • Withdrawing from family and friends

  • Experiencing mood changes or irritability

  • Having difficulty managing emotions

  • Engaging in risky or impulsive behavior

  • Struggling with friendships and/or peer relationships

Early support can make a significant difference in long term progress.

How Teen Therapy Helps

Therapy focuses on helping teens:

  • Understand and manage their emotions

  • Improve decision-making and behavior

  • Build communication skills

  • Develop confidence and self-awareness

  • Navigate challenges in a healthier way

Sessions are tailored to your teens personality and needs - learning who they are and what’s important to them.

  • Give them breathing room. Skip the car-ride interrogation after their appointment. A simple, "I'm glad you went.

  • Treat it like regular healthcare. Talk about therapy the same way you would talk about seeing a physical therapist for a sprained ankle. It is a completely normal for getting stronger, not punishment.

  • Be ready to team up. If the counselor invites you in for a check-in, show up with an open mind. A teen’s healing usually goes a lot faster when the whole family is willing to help.

  • Lead by example. Practice your own stress management and emotional control in the house. Much of parenting is “caught not taught”.

  • Cheer for the small wins. Don't wait for a big improvement to offer encouragement. If you notice they handled a frustrating moment just a tiny bit better today, let them know.

  • Separate the kid from the chaos. Remind yourself that they aren't a "bad kid"—they are a good kid navigating a really overwhelming time.
