5 Common Things Heard in Therapy

  1. “Easier said then done”

Things discussed in therapy may be challenging but actually implementing the changes outside therapy is the real challenge.

  2. “I don’t know”

People will respond with this statement before they have even given their brain a chance to consider the question, either because they are not used to taking a moment to consider the question or they are hiding behind the statement because of judgement, fear of rejection or truly not knowing.

  3. “Can you just tell me what to do” or “what would you do?”

Doing the work in therapy is hard and many times people want to be told what to do rather then figuring it out on their own. Again, this is based on fear, fear of failing, getting it “wrong” or it taking too long.

  4. “I should have done this a long time ago”

There are a lot of excuses made to avoid therapy, but once people start they realize its not as bad as they thought, or it works and they feel better.

  5. “This isn’t as bad as I thought”

People have judgments about how therapy is going to be. They have been told things, others have shared their negative experiences or they have had a negative experience themselves. But once they find the right fit and therapy works, their perspective changes.
